unanswered question concerning private key

unanswered question concerning private key Scenario: I have a wallet at blockchain I lost the paper with the second password and private key I have the wallet address, the login password to the wallet, and 12 word mnemonics I was suggested to make a brandnew wallet, then import the old's wallet's address I've done so, but it imported as a "watch only" address and it wants the private key. I used the bip39 with my mnemonics, but the address is not to be found in the bip39 generator. What can I do? http://ift.tt/2i4GaD6

Judging the accuracy of coinwarz's solo mining calculator

Judging the accuracy of coinwarz's solo mining calculator I'm trying to determine when to solo mine an alt coin - obviously I can't solo mine BTC. :) The calculator on coinwarz states: Days to generate one block mining solo: 33.89 Day(s) (can vary greatly depending on your luck) So the question is what does this truly mean? I've solo mined before but only on such low diff coins that I wasn't concerned. But at 30 days or so. Yikes, there is a concern. When you flip a coin the expected time to get a head (or tail) is 2 flips (generally speaking). More precisely you have a 50% chance of getting a head in one flip; 75% chance in two; 87.5% chance in three ... and so on. So what does Coinwarz mean when they say 33.89 days? Is this the "two flips" sort of answer or is it something else? My z-nomp pool, for example, gives a completely different answer. It says that my "luck" is 12 days. http://ift.tt/2jAene8

Coinbase price discrepancy?

Coinbase price discrepancy? At the moment the price of a bitcoin on the Coinbase dashboard is $8247 EUR, however in the buy section it's $8840 EUR. I know they have some commissions and spreads, but that's 7%... Is this a bug or a feature? Moreover, the sell price is $8755 EUR! Much higher than the market price! I even bought some for 10 dollars to make sure. In GDAX, which is Coinbase's exchange the price is $8244. Why does Coinbase sell/buy for so high? http://ift.tt/2i4G7Hq

Does mining without a realistic chance of solving a block provide any benefit to the network?

Does mining without a realistic chance of solving a block provide any benefit to the network? Okay, before anyone votes to close this as a duplicate, I would like you to hear me out. Since I began using Bitcoin, I always thought about miners as the people that effectively "host" the bitcoin network as if it were a website. I know this isn't entirely true, but its the analogy i've been using for a while. What I want to know is if I mine Bitcoins on my mid 2011 iMac with the sole intention of helping the bitcoin network, will I be providing any real benefit to the network or will I just be fruitlessly trying to solve problems when the bigger, faster, mining-dedicated computers will ultimately beat me to it? EDIT : Also, as an extension of my question above, could I be one of those miners that tweaks he software and only processes transactions with no fees to provide a greater benefit or would this approach still cause me to get out-hashed by bigger, better computers?

Which exchanges, if any, satisfy the following requirements? [on hold]

Which exchanges, if any, satisfy the following requirements? [on hold] Accepts non-US/non-EU citizens (specifically, they must accept South African citizens). Must be a mostly international or US based exchange (like Coinbase or Kraken). That is, it's supply and demand must either largely be based in the US or EU. Has an API which supports depositing from bank card ($US) into exchange. Has an API which supports withdrawing(sending) from the exchange/wallet, via email. (like this one: http://ift.tt/2xdwLQq ) An example of an exchange which meets requirements 1 and 2, but fails 3 and 4 is CEX.io, while an exchange meeting requirements 4, but failing all others would LUNO.com http://ift.tt/2i4JYnT

How to mines scrypt altcoins before a pool exists?

How to mines scrypt altcoins before a pool exists? Nowdays, it’s no longer possible to mine any new altcoin as first miner. As soon as a mining pool is announced on bitcointalk for a freshly new coin with new blockchain, there’s 1Gh/s of mining power on it less than 5 minutes later. Is it possible to use ccminer/cgminer for solo mining directly from databases an ports ? If not, how to set up a pool for an altcoin with wallet software that don’t provide a mining port ? An example use case I’m talking about is https://gmdcoin.co (scrypt coin with no mining pool and wallet only capable of stacking) http://ift.tt/2i4G3ra

Where is seed in Bitcoin Core in comparison to Bread Wallet

Where is seed in Bitcoin Core in comparison to Bread Wallet Im new to Bitcoin. I know the main software of bitcoin is Bitcoin Core. Recently i started using an iOS wallet called Bread. Its very simple! It gives me a 12 word key and says your master private key can extract from this and no need to backup your wallet as a file. My question is: i readed that Bitcoin Core in the new versions is an HD Wallet. But it never gives me a seed like bread. Im confused. I have an assumption but i dont know its right or not: My master private key stored in a file unlike bread. I have to encrypt my walled from bitcoin core settings menu and the from file menu choose Backup Wallet and save it. In fact, in the future, i have to import that file and enter encryption passphrase that i created in the encryption step and the software fetches my private key from that file and load my entire wallet from blockchain. In bread i enter that 12 word and bread creates my private key and so on... in bitcoin core

Security concerns when downloading the block chain from a 3rd party source?

Security concerns when downloading the block chain from a 3rd party source? It takes very long until bitcoin-core has downloaded the whole block chain. So I decided to download the block chain files via a bittorrent published by this website: http://ift.tt/2AmeQbY After the download was finished I noticed that the md5 checksums of the files from the torrent were different then of the files from bitcoin-core. Why could that be? Are there any security related concerns of using a block chain from a 3rd party source? http://ift.tt/2itFGKO

How is eth transaction so fast than btc?

How is a miner prevented from adding transactions without signatures to their block?

How is a miner prevented from adding transactions without signatures to their block? Consider I'm a miner. I mine on my own, I don't mine in pools. I have power enough to find the hash, lets say, once per 2 years. When I find the hash within those 2 years I send the block back to the network and since the hash is low enough the block would be accepted and added to the block-chain. It's up to miners (so me) to check the transaction signatures but the block AFAIK doesn't contain the signatures. How can others within the network can be sure that all the transactions in my block which I calculated were signed? If I was an evil miner, I could have added a transaction without a signature. How is this prevented? Am I the only one who checks the signatures within my block? Thanks for explanation. http://ift.tt/2itFE5E

How can extended public keys generate child public keys without generating the child private key in HD wallets?

How can extended public keys generate child public keys without generating the child private key in HD wallets? According to the documentation on bitcoin.org and the Mastering Bitcoin book, you can use an extended public key to create child public keys in HD wallets by combining the lefthand side of the hash output of the parent chain code + parent public key + index: The seemingly-random 256 bits on the lefthand side of the hash output are used as the integer value to be combined with either the parent private key or parent public key to, respectively, create either a child private key or child public key I understand how this lefthand side output can be combined with the parent private key to generate the child private key, which in turn can be used to generate a valid child public key. How is it possible that the child public key generated by combining the hash output with the parent public key corresponds to the child private key generated separately by combining the same has

Can a hardfork occur due to changing the consensus protocol

Can a hardfork occur due to changing the consensus protocol Hardforks occur when protocols with cryptocurrency occur such as modifying any of its parameters. Is it possible or has it ever happened for a hardforked altcoin to exist due to a change in the cryptcurrency's consensus algorithm. I mean a change from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake for example, not just changing the hash function used within the proof-of-work as happened with Bitcoin gold. http://ift.tt/2AqiqnL

What is the most expensive part of mining?

What is the most expensive part of mining? From my understanding, miner's take a bunch of transactions and use a nonce, previous block and the transaction data to try and find a hash that beats the difficulty. As soon as this happens, will their block be added, and then 99 blocks later the BTC will be awarded. Is the solving aspect of the hash the most expensive part, for the computer? Or is gathering the transactions and confirming them more expensive? How does one confirm the transactions? Do they have to traverse the entire blockchain, or only find the most recent ledger which shows both user's balances to confirm? http://ift.tt/2isRblF

Where's my bitcoin account?

Is mining essentially just a way to randomly select the next winning miner?

Is mining essentially just a way to randomly select the next winning miner? I know it's not really a completely random selection because some miners have more hashing power so their odds are increased. But let's assume for a moment that all miners are about equal in hashing power. The way I see it, whoever solves the current block is (almost) completely unpredictable and thus mining is just a way to randomly select a winning miner. I understand about decentralizing and the need for a decentralized way of selecting this winner without trusting a higher authority for this random selection. Let's imagine for a moment that there was this "god-like" machine somewhere, completely trustworthy and incorruptible, impossible to bring down or shutdown and completely fair. Let's say this machine would select the winning miner that would create and sign the next block and get the reward and fees. Would there still be a need for mining in that case? http://ift.tt/2iqI

How can Electrum restore a wallet?

How can Electrum restore a wallet? I've some questions about the technique of storing and restoring a wallet using Electrum. I found out that Electrum stored a file on my PC. This file has my wallet's name so I think this file contains my bitcoins. If I deleted this file, my money will be lost forever, Am I right? I have 12 words (The seed). Will those words restore the file if it is deleted? Or Are they just used to restore password? What are all the things that I need to restore my wallet? (Eg. the file, the seed, the password, private keys, ... etc) Thank you so much, http://ift.tt/2ApA0sa

sending Satoshi to a output of a unconfirmed transaction

sending Satoshi to a output of a unconfirmed transaction this is a hypothetical question, reason is that my own incoming transaction is stuck because of another ancestor transaction that is already in mempool. for almost 1 day. since I am neither the sender or receiver of this transaction that is stuck. would it be still possible for me to send coins to the output of the unconfirmed transaction with a higher fee so that the one that is in limbo due to low fees will pass through? I have a full bitcoin node running locally. however I don't have mining power to mine those stuck transaction. so i am looking for alternatives. Thanks in advance why I don't just to CPFP on my own is because mine hasn't reached mempool yet, I get the pending que from chain.so which is hashflare.io private block chain gui which includes pending widthtawals http://ift.tt/2ng3BPn

Is there any way to listen to all transactions using bitcoind api?

Is there any way to listen to all transactions using bitcoind api? I understand that using json-rpc to listen for all transactions is a bad idea due to performance, but bitcoinj is able to do it. In reality bitcoind is parsing all transactions under the hood when it forwards them. Is there any way for bitcoind to notify me when it sees a new transaction (not paying to an address in the wallet)? Surely its is able to notify other peers, so why not me? One solution I am thinking of is running connecting a bitcoinj node to my bitcoind and then using that to listen to transactions. Another solution is to just listen for blocks and lose the ability to see zero conf payments. http://ift.tt/2AsCF4c

Storing private key in apps and softwares that are local

Storing private key in apps and softwares that are local Im new to butcoin. I installed an app in my phone called Bread. And another in my computer called Electrum. Both of them generated a seed(12 words) for me and it seems that seeed is my private key in the bitcoin network. My question is: these softwares has my private key and i dont know if they stored it in remote servers. This means someone other has my private key and can access my money? This is a safe way in bitcoin culture? They are really local? I want to use safest way to work with bitcoin and i dont want store my info in any website or app that can access my account, delete my account or any other intervention. For safest way should i have my own copy of public ledger in a personal server? What is the safest way? http://ift.tt/2nidhJd

Crypto exchange preventing me from exchanging bitcoin because my order will cause 'substantial loss'

Crypto exchange preventing me from exchanging bitcoin because my order will cause 'substantial loss' I was going to exchange some very small amount of bitcoin for Ethereum-Classic and got prevented by the exchange, BTCMarkets because im in Australia saying it would cause me substantial loss when I tried to do the trade I thought that if Bitcoin is higher (right) now and ETC is lower, whats the issue with buying ETC with Bitcoin. Don't you get more ETC if its low relative to Bitcoin than if it was high? To simplify this even more, lets say that right now: 1 BTC = 5 ETH You buy 5 ETH with your 1 BTC. After one month the 'value' of ETH goes up. This is good? Why would I be prevented from buying ETC when its fallen 10%? http://ift.tt/2ng3uDr

Legally shuttering miners and full nodes by adding illegal information to blockchain [duplicate]

Legally shuttering miners and full nodes by adding illegal information to blockchain [duplicate] This question already has an answer here: Ramifications of illegal content in transaction messages? 2 answers In many jurisdictions possession or distribution of certain information or content is illegal. Illegal primes, classified information, magnet links to copyrighted torrents, hate speech, outlawed pornography, incitements to terrorism, etc. Not all of this is efficiently encoded in the blockchain, but at least some can be. Let's say a wealthy malicious actor wanted to disrupt the bitcoin network or crater the price. He could subsidize transactions containing illegal content. Moreover he could most likely do this anonymously or near-anonymously. One or two instances would most likely be ignored by legal authorities. But persistent violations would most likely raise the ire of the courts. US federal judges regularly issue injunctions taking down websites. It's unlikely

Antminer D3 Blissz Modified Firmware For Improved Performance

Image
Antminer D3 Blissz Modified Firmware For Improved Performance It is not a secret that the default firmware and even settings for many of the ASIC miners that come out from the manufacturers are hardly with the best/optimal settings and often they are also limited in what you can tweak yourself. So some more advanced users take the matter in their hands in order to further optimize for performance and or stability and reliability and even add extra features that help owners of the devices to get better profit or higher profit for example. One such case is the Antminer D3 Blissz Modified Firmware for the X11 ASICs being produces by Bitmain that you might want to give a try if you have even at least one of these ASIC miners. The custom firmware promises up to 20% lower power usage and some extra features such as ASIC voltage settings per chain as well as the ability to overclock or underclock per chain as well as more control on fan operational speeds. Then I turn off the wifi connection on my pc and open the downloaded file and generate many pairs of public and private keys (which I write down on paper). Once I'm done, I clear the web browser history, cache, cookies, etc. and delete the downloaded files. Would this be enough to make sure no records of the keys of any kind are left anywhere on the pc? Should I restart the pc before turning its wifi connection back on again? Or should I reinstall the operating system just in case? Or would it be a good idea to install Deep Freeze before generating the keys? I'm planning to continue using my pc for my daily work. Thanks in advance!! http://ift.tt/2An2Edm

Unconfirmed transaction / double spend warning [duplicate]

Unconfirmed transaction / double spend warning [duplicate] This question already has an answer here: Why is my transaction not getting confirmed and what can I do about it? 9 answers I transferred some coins from my Electrum Wallet to my Coinbase Wallet, however the transaction got stuck as unconfirmed (possibly because of low fees). What causes quadratic hash problem?

What causes quadratic hash problem? I read ScriptSig content during signature (quadratic hashing) discussing quadratic hash problem. Quadratic hash problem is the issue that signing (or verifying) transaction time grows with the square of the number of inputs (O(n^2) where n is the number of inputs). Why is that so? I reason the following: For each input you construct different template. O(n) This template must be double-SHA-hashed. - Double-SHA-hash duration is dependent linearly on the size of the template. Double hashed template (of fixed length) is then signed. - as the leght is fixed this step is of fixed duration As step 2 is dependent linearly on the size of the template, thus it is linearly dependent on the number of inputs, giving final time dependency relation O(n^2)? More precisely O(n^2+m) where m is the number of outputs (as this contributes in step 2)? http://ift.tt/2BtRtgN

Is a wallet simply a folder of private keys?

Is a wallet simply a folder of private keys? I try to understand how a wallet actually works. I know there are lots of resources around the internet, but I still can't find simple and concise answers for basic questions about wallets and private keys. How does a Ledger Nano S work? Is it simply a wallet? Is a wallet simply a folder/directory containing a number (1 or more) of private keys, each able to generate a public address? I imagine an entire wallet as a simple text file with a number of lines, each containing a private key (plus some functionality to see the number of coins sent to the public addresses associated with the private keys). What ensures that a private key, generated in a wallet, is compatible with, for instance, the Bitcoin blockchain? According to my understanding, a private key is simply an encrypted integer value. Shouldn't this encrypted integer value be registered in the Bitcoin blockchain, ensuring it's valid and all other wallets are a

If a single private key of the HD bitcoin account is compromised, is the whole HD account compromised?

If a single private key of the HD bitcoin account is compromised, is the whole HD account compromised? The subject pretty much asks it all. I asked the same question on the Mycelium web site but did not get an answer. An HD account can have multiple private keys. If one of the previous private keys gets compromised (falls into hands of a hacker) and this private key has no bitcoins assigned to it. Would the hacker be able to re-create subsequent private keys based on this single one private key? The question applies to Mycelium and all other HD accounts. Also, is there a standardized way how private keys are created or each wallet does it on its own? This question is important to me since we see more and more bitcoin forks. To claim newly forked bitcoins I would need to import private key(s) into another wallet. Assuming the new wallet may be used to harvest my private keys and to spend bitcoins, I would like to move my bitcoins from my HD account from private_key1->public_key1-&g

Safely generating Bitcoin paper wallets

Safely generating Bitcoin paper wallets I'm new to Bitcoin and I have recently purchased a few fractions of Bitcoin. My BTC are stored on what I understand is an online wallet (a website where I log in using two-factor authentication and where I can buy/sell BTC as well as send/receive BTC). The problem is that my BTC are stored online, which means that they could be potentially exposed to threats like hackers, viruses, technical problems, the website going down, fraud, etc. So, after having searched for other options, I decided that the most secure way of storing BTC would be on a paper wallet. Creating a paper wallet at bitaddress.org doesn't seem to be that difficult, but of course one has to be sure that the public and private keys are being generated in a completely safe, malware-free environment. Many advanced users employ what are to me very complicated techniques for generating such keys, such as booting the operating system from a pendrive, using Ubuntu, Tails and man

Recover Bitcoin From Transaction ID

Image
Recover Bitcoin From Transaction ID Back in 2013 I bought some bitcoin for a relatively low price, and stored them in an Electrum wallet on my PC. However, I changed PCs a year or two later, and forgot to copy the bitcoin wallet over. Given the current soaring price, I now have a renewed interest in trying to recover these seemingly lost bitcoins. I took a screenshot of the blockchain.info page that was displayed shortly after the transaction was completed. I believe this shows the transaction ID, plus the wallet Id it was transferred to. Here's an edited version of the page I screenshotted, obviously with the IDs hidden so no-one else steals them :) I've tried revisiting this website, based on the previous URL, which I believe was the transaction Id. I receive an error: Invalid Transaction Hash Now, obviously bitcoin has split in two, and this was pre-split. So, what are the various values that are shown on the screenshot (top left appears to be transaction id, bottom r

Is there a way to predict somehow the required storage for a specific blockchain?

Is there a way to predict somehow the required storage for a specific blockchain? I'd like to store a blockchain or two in my computer. Blockchains are pretty heavy (I took over 3hs to download GameCredits blockchain, and is one of the smallest blockchains, I guess). Bitcoin's change back

Bitcoin's change back I'm starting a new project that uses bitcoin. I'm afraid some feature can't be done, or aren't safe. I'd like to validate some ideas: I'll create a wallet/address and publish it on the project's website. All customers are supposed to pay/transfer BTCs to the same address (identify the payment is not a problem). Eventually, I'll need to refund a customer. 1) Is it safe to refund the customer using the same address he/she used to pay me? 2) Can I continue using the same address for receiving BTCs after a refound? I know that, when you send money to another address, the change back is sent to another address (still yours). 3) Can I send a % of a wallet to an address and the remaining/change back to a new address (totally different wallet/private key) in the same transaction. http://ift.tt/2AaTGiR

Dynamic Transaction Hash Confirmation

Dynamic Transaction Hash Confirmation I am working on a donation based community website (using PHP) where participants register for an account to participate. Each account carries the participant's bitcoin address. A participant makes a commitment to donate say $10 and is paired with another participant (recipient). The donor confirms payment by pasting his/her Transaction hash id on his dashboard to confirm payments. I currently use Blockchain.info API to read the transaction details and check the inputs and outputs of the transaction to ensure that they contain both donor and recipient BTC addresses and the expected amount. My problem is that most wallet providers generate new BTC address after each transaction making it difficult for my code to confirm transaction as the address will not match if new ones are generated. How do I confirm transactions for dynamic BTC addresses using PHP OR how would you handle this use case? Thanks http://ift.tt/2n8FBgV

Duplex micropayment channels: criticisms of Lightning and implementation

Duplex micropayment channels: criticisms of Lightning and implementation A paper from 2015 by Decker and Wattenhofer proposes an interesting design for a payment channel network, which differs from the Lightning network. The authors claim in the Related work section that Lightning: "requires exchanging keying material for each update in the channels, which results in either massive storage or computational requirements", and "cannot be decomposed into smaller units that can be analyzed in isolation, making the security analysis difficult and resulting in complex implementations". I have two questions: To what extent are those criticisms of Lightning valid as of November 2017? Is there an implementation of Duplex micropayment channels or at least plans to create one? http://ift.tt/2A8RLvj

Possible to speed up reindex?

Possible to speed up reindex? I just reindexed a node that was already synced (in order to enable txindex); it took around 9 hours. It's on a pretty good system: 16G RAM, i7 with 4 physical cores. Storage is a weak point, with LUKS on software RAID0 on spinning disks. dbcache is at the default 100M, though I'm running 0.11 so I gather this ends up smaller than the previous default due to more accurate accounting. By extrapolation from testing a subset, a sequential read of the full ~38G of blk files should take ~4 minutes. I understand reindex includes rebuilding the chainstate db, so I'm guessing that's the bottleneck. Questions: 1) reindex doesn't also re-validate blocks, does it? 2) Any experience with speeding this up -- perhaps putting chainstate on a tmpfs and copying to permanent storage once complete? Followup: by increasing dbcache as suggested, and adding a recent custom checkpoint to the code, I got another reindex done in about 3 hours. http://ift.tt/

I would like to, sooner or later, use it as integrated in a game of my own, but I don't know how to start. http://ift.tt/2BcSFEn

how to configue multiple miners on a single network laptop/router?

how to configue multiple miners on a single network laptop/router? I have 2 S9's, a router and laptop. Question: do the S9's have separate IP addresses or just one network IP for both miners? I realize this sounds stupid, however, I cant figure out how to apply 2 IP addresses to the Bitmain s/w set up. All the set up examples only show 1 miner. Thank you so much, Bill http://ift.tt/2iSWvf6

Why is scriptSig filled with scriptPubKey before signing a transaction?

Why is scriptSig filled with scriptPubKey before signing a transaction? I'm checking the transaction signing as described here Redeeming a raw transaction step by step example required . What is the reason for steps 5 and 6: temporarily filling scriptSig with scriptPubKey of the output we want to redeem? Can't this just be skipped, as with txid and output index we uniquely specify the output thus scriptPubKey and we don't get any value with this filling? http://ift.tt/2BeSHeT
