Make sure your crypto is secure

Make sure your crypto is secure The current situation on the crypto-currency market resembles a «crazy roller coaster». The incredible growth of the exchange rate has turned the head of the crypto-enthusiasts. In general, the prognoses of ordinary investors remain extremely optimistic and the major players of the stock exchange regularly warm up the interest in the bitcoins with their loud statements about its increase in value. http://ift.tt/2qegz1B

Few questions on Bitcoin purchase and transfer

Few questions on Bitcoin purchase and transfer would like to know how you do things from buying Bitcoin to transferring it to Poloniex/other wallet. 1) Where do you buy Bitcoins (USD/SGD/PHP/OtherCurrencies to Bitcoin)? 2) How do you transfer it to another wallet (i.e to Poloniex)? 3) When transferring an amount to Poloniex, does it have a low transaction fee? http://ift.tt/2CfpnWJ

From multibit to electrum : low fee and unconfirmed parent

From multibit to electrum : low fee and unconfirmed parent I made 3 btc transfer from my old Multibit classic wallet a few weeks ago (dec. 11), then I discovered that the fee was far too low for the transfers to be confirmed. I then restored my original wallet into Electrum, and it shows me these 3 transactions with different status : Low Fee (44 sat/byte) - 0.0068 btc unconfirmed parent (52 sat/byte) - 0.04497458 btc unconfirmed parent (19 sat/byte) - 0.1221 btc Unfortunately I cannot adjust fee on these transactions, so I tried a CPFP when making a new transfer from another wallet I created in electrum to my original wallet, but no result. I tried to reproduce the 1st transfer, from the original wallet, same src/dest and amount but with Higher Fee (598 sat/byte)... no result. I'm afraid to be stuck at this stage, I don't know what to do to unlock these transactions :( any detailed advice is welcome ! (i'm on OSX if asked). http://ift.tt/2CGPZAM

Almost a month, transaction still not confirmed... help? [duplicate]

Almost a month, transaction still not confirmed... help? [duplicate] This question already has an answer here: Why is my transaction not getting confirmed and what can I do about it? 10 answers I sent a transaction of 0.12 BTC with a fee of 11 sat/b. I expected the transaction to take a while to send, like a week, but it's already been almost a month. Is there something I can do to boost the transaction? A month ago I also sent a transaction of 0.03 BTC with a 15 sat/b fee and it took 4 hours to confirm. I didn't expected the 11 sat/b fee to take so much longer... http://ift.tt/2CeqhCE

Will Bitcoin Transaction Evicted From Mempool Disappear From Blockchain Explorer?

Will Bitcoin Transaction Evicted From Mempool Disappear From Blockchain Explorer? From the question below I can see the circumstances under which a transaction will be removed from the Bitcoin mempool :- How do transactions leave the memory pool? Whilst a transaction is still unconfirmed, it shows up in the Blockchain.info Explorer as an 'Unconfirmed Transaction!', within a red colored button. This button then turns to blue with "1 Confirmations" when the transaction is confirmed. However if the transaction remains unconfirmed for a long time and the button remains at red, and if the transaction is then eventually "evicted" from the mempool, will the Blockchain Explorer then just report "Transaction Not Found" when I search for the transaction's id ? I would find this behaviour useful as it would allow me to tell when a transaction has effectively been cancelled. If the red button is still showing, I know my transaction may still have a cha

Is it possible to get stuck with a block that nobody can mine?

Is it possible to get stuck with a block that nobody can mine? The hash of a bitcoin block is generated from: Block version number (partially fixed*, 4 bits) Previous block hash (fixed, 256 bits) Merkle root (not fixed, 256 bits), Time (not fixed, 4 bits), Bits (partially fixed*, 4 bits), Nonce (not fixed, 4 bits). So, the block hash is generated from 528 bits. You can change 264 bits freely to try to have a hash that matches the current diff, and 264 bits are immutable. Is there a property on the SHA-256 function that asserts that on these 264 bits of freedom, one combination will give us a hash that is matches the diff requirements? If not, does that mean that the blockchain could get stuck on a block because nobody can mine on it? * "Partially fixed" values could be overriden by software updates for example. I assume that partially fixed values are fixed to simplify. http://ift.tt/2lHqcjH

How Lightning channels will helps with scaling in practice

How Lightning channels will helps with scaling in practice I watched the 2015 presentation of LN, and I've read a portion of the paper - so I understand basically how the channels work (I think). However, I'm not sure I've fully grasped how this will help scalability in practice. If Bob and Alice want to transact (let's say Alice is a random internet retailer - not Amazon - and Bob wants to buy waaaaaay too many tattoo stickers for his daughters for Christmas, not realizing that each little package has like 40 sheets of the things). Bob would then have to open a channel with Alice, transfer the balance required to complete the purchase, and then the channel would be closed. For pretty much all economic relationships except for a few enormous ones (Amazon, eBay, Walmart, etc), you won't (and wouldn't be able to) keep open channels all the time. From these two observations, I wonder: wouldn't the process of opening / closing a channel actually create two tr

Digibyte Wallet Hash

Digibyte Wallet Hash I recently invested in digibyte. As someone of IT-security field, I'd love to know how the passphrase is stored in digibytes wallet.dat. The Bitcoin2John doesn't work on it and hashcat, too, has no support for the wallet. I couldn't find any information on how storage is done, so I'm asking you. Best wishes and thanks in advance http://ift.tt/2lHqd7f

If the bitcoin address changes every time, why there is more than one transaction for an address in the ledger?

If the bitcoin address changes every time, why there is more than one transaction for an address in the ledger? I was checking a random address in blockchain.com, there are alot of transactions that is done over this address. While in the website it is mentioned that the address is changing everytime! One private key for two wallet problem - How can I get bitcoin hard fork?

One private key for two wallet problem - How can I get bitcoin hard fork? I have a wallet named w1 which has the united bitcoin already (I checked on the block explorer) When I extract w1's private key and put into the united bitcoin desktop wallet, it points to a different wallet w2. This w2 does not have any hard forked coin. My question is: How can I let the desktop wallet know I want it point the address to w1, not w2 ? http://ift.tt/2CEM1IJ

Mining Theory: GPU Computation vs Co-processor Computation

Mining Theory: GPU Computation vs Co-processor Computation I am very new to bitcoin and I am trying to understand a bit about mining theory. I do not dispute the convention of using GPU based computation for bitcoin mining, but rather I'm curious about why they outperform co-processors like this for mining. Maybe a nuanced discussion of a few of the various trade-offs would be the easiest and clearest way to understand things. Let me break it down like this: Parallelism: Co-processors are mostly used for task parallel code (non-vectorized code) whereas GPUs are adept at data parallel (vectorized) code. Two questions come to mind: Are all mining codes in vectorized languages? Can there ever be a benefit to mine in task parallel code? It seems like with bitcoin mining, there is only 1 task: crunching numbers. Am I oversimplifying it though? Perhaps with task parallelism one could run other algorithms to assist with the number crunching (such as compression, flush to zero, ect).

In Bitcoin source, what is the UniValue objects purpose?

In Bitcoin source, what is the UniValue objects purpose? In the bitcoin source code you can see a lot of objects of type UniValue, particularly in the miner.cpp and rpc/mining.cpp. What is the utility of this UniValue object? Is it used to update the blockchain, or simply to return a message to a miner in their console? http://ift.tt/2A6wdLZ

How different crypto exchange correlate with prices

How different crypto exchange correlate with prices I did searched on how the crypto exchange works, However I do not find the exact answer to my questions. Let's assume we are talking about two exchanges - Exchange A - USA based, local (i.e. users kyc based on US identity card like SSN). Exchange B - Indian based, (i.e. users kyc based on indian identity card like Adhaar) So Exchange A will have only US users and B will have only Indian users. Now if US people are believing that bitcoin price will rise and purchase a lot of bitcoin and price increases by some %, how it will affect the price in exchange B? As 90% of Exchange B users will be sleeping and will not know that price on exchange A is increasing, how it will relate? Will any user on Exchange B ever be able to purchase bitcoin from any user of exchange A?? The above scenario also make me question how will the very first user of exchange B will buy and from whom will it buy the bitcoin http://ift.tt/2A6KKY4

Why there are miner fees now?

Why there are miner fees now? I understand the mining fee will be the major incentive when the Bitcoin supply hit its limit of 21m. But right now, new coins are still being minted and are much higher than any fee can compansate. Shouldn't the fee calculation be a WIP improvement protocol that needs to be worked on in the Testnet rather than causing huge innefficeny in the Main Bitcoin network? I am very sorry if it is naive to think that, but I see that many debates on Bitcoin's future are based on the high amount of miner fees or the long waiting time for confirmations. Why shouldn't miners just add the transactions randomly and just incentivized by the reward? I believe the mainstream usage adoption will be provided by the people who can't afford the current miner fees, but still wish there could be a way to actually use the network at least in a fair way where the highest fee couldn't win the confirmation race. To sum up, I am wondering, why the fee structure

Public key for testnet address

Public key for testnet address I'm trying to create a transaction on the testnet (manually). I have the following private key: cQKqSNkEdyLJziQSr4iKTUJC95s9HHFo4bY88gi2i6v2quiVVLZb which belongs to the following public address: mkhn3gfrGHmd4b1ZmHLdMsbQd2eHRKg8wN. When I try to sign the transaction, the public (uncompressed) key that I generate, is: 042d7331345e0da6ab1125eb39488a542a9923f31c585c20114d211a9f6bc9f3bf55d1d843cb7cf1d36b32d1cb00d2f140ef028e726a19a766f6ca7cef7b956583. This turns out to be invalid (because the transaction gets rejected by the network). However, when I tried using a tool for signing the transaction, it generated the following (correct) public key: 040b4a4274222d7239d33c17ce39d753eee97103773b7e5a89e62f0ef0121032d7331345e0da6ab1125eb39488a542a9923f31c585c20114d211a9f6bc9f3b. Bitcoin withdrawal issue I have withdrawn BTC from an exchange to be sent to another. However, I haven't receieved it. Why search for a nonce linearly (+1) vs searching only even or odd nonces?

Why search for a nonce linearly (+1) vs searching only even or odd nonces? As a solo miner, you have the disadvantage of a minuscule hash rate compared to mining pools. Is it not possible to searching for only even nonces? Of course you risk the chance of missing the nonce, but you gain an effective 2x hash rate. I wonder how this or other nonce searching methods might impacts your chance on average. What if you search downwards for a nonce? Skipping (even, odd, every third, etc). http://ift.tt/2zZ9txp

Private key exported from Electrum, unable to recreate Address with Python

Private key exported from Electrum, unable to recreate Address with Python I have created a new Electrum wallet, and here is an address: 1JkZLnmFfpVFLT2ZMtKzc6BuXMdmY41EHA By right-clicking on it, I choose "Private key" which gives: Kzuucz58MiTbbedeVuqBaPYwG1TQrV3n2NYU2dJRZ7HEHnHsUXWx Now I want to be able (to learn how it works) to go from this private key to the address, via elliptic curve multiplication. Coinbase address still has a balance

Coinbase address still has a balance I understand that Coinbase creates many btc addresses per wallet. I am not sure though that if you have an overall zero balance (or $0.01 overall) all your associated btc addresses should also have a zero balance. So, here is the actual question: I see that one of my btc addresses associated to one of my coinbase wallets (let's call the address ABC123) still has a bitcoin non zero balance. It's not a rounding issue as the balance is too large for this. Overall my coinbase balance is almost zero. Does this make sense? When I go to https://bitref.com and check ABC123 I can see the balance. http://ift.tt/2EuFuBh

26 byte private key?

26 byte private key? I've noticed websites like bitaddress.org generating private keys consisting of 26 bytes string (instead of 32). For example, I received the following pair: Private: L1d2VhSoT6yBzvDqjnFC85zF23MFf4wZAVVJMeG6JongbL2UxEhS, Public: 1MNgBN9QpG6yy2H9xb9JCuwCtjeppNwj4X. How did they generate the public address from the above private key? Following the regular procedure, this private key should be invalid. Edit: I figured now that it should be a compressed private key. When it comes to generating a public key from a private key, what's the difference in the procedure with a compressed and uncompressed private key? How is a compressed private key generated from a given 32 byte string? For example, on this answer , how did he generate KwntMbt59tTsj8xqpqYqRRWufyjGunvhSyeMo3NTYpFYzZbXJ5Hp from 1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111? http://ift.tt/2CqB4Nj

How cab Bitcoin be stolen?

How cab Bitcoin be stolen? Well, if each bitcoin has a ledger (Peer to Peer) and contains all the transaction history since it was mined. Then how come it can be stolen? For example, Bitcoins were stolen by hackers from Mt. Gox. If the Bitcoins each have a ledger it would show its owner and the Mt. Gox account. So it would be traceable and hard to trade if stolen. Maybe I am not fully clear, would appreciate clarification - thanks! http://ift.tt/2CqB1RD

How double spend is handled in lightning Network?

How double spend is handled in lightning Network? How Lightning Network handles double-spend? What will happen when the other person is not available online to enforce the integrity of the transactions? PFB my understanding of the Lightning Network. Lightning Network builds an additional layer on top of the Bitcoin network that enables instant off-chain transfer of the ownership of the Bitcoin. Lightning Network utilises bi-directional payments channels that consist of multi-signature address.  Meaning Bitcoin will be held in a multi-signature address where transaction will use a multi-sign address as their input and point at two different address as their output. The transaction inside the lighting network are not broadcasted to the bitcoin network as long the channel is open(in order to reduce the load on the blockchain). In this example how is Alice prevented from double spending? Alice and Bob both send 0.05 BTC into a shared 2-of-2 multisig address. This requires a transac

Test vectors for bitcoin core (blocks and transactions) needed

Test vectors for bitcoin core (blocks and transactions) needed I am looking for test vectors to test edge cases of an implementation. For instance: "Unusual" blocks that made it to the blockchain Non standard transactions that made it to the blockchain Anything else that will help in testing the implementation. I have already obtained test vectors for secp256k1, so those are not needed. (If anyone needs them please comment below). http://ift.tt/2lBjUSH
