Penalty for submitting invalid share to the mining pool

What is the penalty for submitting invalid share(not stale share) to pool in pool mining? Some mining pool like Minergate Invalid Share policy penalize account balance for submitting invalid share.

Is there any general rule to penalize for submitting invalid share? OR the mining pool simply reject the invalid share, no penalty is imposed on the miner, is it the case? Is there any mining pool who ban user for submitting invalid share?
