I goofed with a low transaction fee

I've tried to transfer my bitcoins to another wallet but, unfortunately, I was a bit green and I think I may have chosen a transaction fee that was too low (it's been unconfirmed for days now). Can I increase the transaction fee post-hoc or otherwise cancel the transaction? Are my btc going to be stuck in limbo forever?
