How does a new node build the blockchain in proof of stake proposals?

What are the steps that a new node in a proof-of-stake system (eg Casper or Tendermint) will take to create its initial copy of the blockchain? I am imagining that a node could be flooded with fake versions of the blockchain by adverse nodes with blockchains showing that these adverse nodes have the largest stake.

In proof-of-work bitcoin, you pick the longest blockchain, and trust the longest blockchain knowing that it takes significant computational power to fake the longest blockchain.
