Haven't touched Bitcoin since 2014. Need advice. What have I missed!? Forks!? Updates? [on hold]

I feel silly for asking but what have I missed!? My last transaction was 3/15/14 when I was still mining with an old butterfly labs miner.

I need advice!!!!

1) I was using Bitcoin QT. I have downloaded Bitcoin Core and it is reindexing blocks for hours with no progress. I do not remember my passphrase and my wallet is locked. Can I get my coins somehow? I know my receiving address.

2) What are forks? Am I entitled to any? How do I access them?

3) What wallet should I be using today?
