Why do some addresses not show balances on block explorer?

Why do some addresses not show balances on block explorer?

I have several addresses all containing coins. If I use the various block explorer sites and APIs, some addresses show the balance, and others show zero.

The addresses are from a wallet generated in Jaxx and which I'm now using Coinomi to view (in Coinomi the balances are all correct)

I'm writing a little OSX app to show the balance of my various addresses, so I'm looking for APIs which will reliably return the balance from an address. I don't mind using different APIs for different coins.
