Seg-wit vs non-segwit

Whats the difference? what is the definition of these 2 terms? As I state, I am looking for someone to show me the ropes. If yal all wanna be stingy thats fine i suppose. I suppose I can just keep reading the tutorials. I just want to make this whole cryptocurrency thing at bare min halfway work just to prove to myself that it is possible. Any takers?
