My friend passed away - what can I do with his wallet?

So I don't really know all that much about Bitcoins - other than the fact that they seem to be everywhere at the moment.

I have a friend who passed away in March of this year. He was always very interested in this cyber-currency, and had spoken about his coins since around 2013.

I have no idea if he had any bitcoins in his account when he passed away, but if he did - is there a way to get access to them so they can be handed over to his family?
